What is it about the last few pages of a novel that is so hard to write?

I have less than 20 pages to go on the first draft of my WIP, and they are excruciatingly hard to get on paper. I’ve already written the ending. I know exactly what needs to happen – the dots will connect just fine. But I find myself distracted - jotting notes for another character that is whispering a different kind of story to me. And I’ve written a synopsis for a possible second adventure for my current protagonist. I suppose it’s a good thing to have ideas springing anew, but I wish they would stay out of the way long enough to finish my current story!

For me, what it is is this: once it's "done," I have to face the facts about whether it stinks or not and how much work there still is to do!

Lately, I've been having the hardest time coming up with the first few pages. LOL! I think that's about to change because I think I have an idea what I really want to write about now. Good luck with finishing you story.

Jacqui - It's funny that you said that. One of my writer friends seems to think I don't want to finish it. Tomorrow's blog entry will address this issue!

Rena - I WILL finish! (LOL) I knocked off a few pages tonight. That's a start.

I think it's hard because we've become so connected to the story and our characters, we want to do it justice. We want to get it right.

Welcome to blogging!

I have a MG story that I started about 2 years ago...I sat down one day and wrote a 18 chapter outline and then wrote the first 9 chapters...since that time, I have been stumped...I know where my story is suppose to go and what is suppose to happen in between, but every time I try to write it, my brain goes on vacation! I am bound and determined to get this story finished...I just need to give the other voices in my head a sleeping pill, so they can be quiet! grin...

Brenda,
I was told that working backwards can sometimes get you unstuck. I'll give it a whirl and let you know how it goes.
